FORTO Requests Exemption from TET for Legally Appointed Teachers

Forum leaders have referred to a clarification from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) dated August 28, 2017. The clarification indicates that the NCTE did not establish minimum qualifications for teacher recruitment prior to September 3, 2001. Consequently, it emphasizes that state-specific recruitment rules were in effect for teacher appointments during that timeframe.

This clarification is significant as it highlights the regulatory framework surrounding teacher qualifications and recruitment in India. The NCTE, established in 1995, is responsible for the planning and coordination of teacher education and training in the country. The absence of prescribed minimum qualifications before 2001 could impact the eligibility of numerous educators who were appointed under state rules prior to this date. This situation raises important questions about the standards for teacher qualifications and the implications for teaching effectiveness in institutions across various states.
