FSSAI Issues Nine Notices to E-Commerce Platform for Alleged Food Safety Violations
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued nine notices to the e-commerce platform Swiggy Instamart concerning alleged violations of food safety regulations. These actions come in response to multiple consumer complaints regarding the sale of expired products, including health supplements and perishable food items.
Among the products flagged by the FSSAI are expired batches of Healthify Whey Protein and Akshayakalpa eggs, which have raised significant concerns among consumers about the retailer’s quality control practices. The notices were prompted by reports of spoiled baby formula and contaminated milk products also linked to Swiggy Instamart.
Swiggy has responded to the FSSAIs notices, stating that it has resolved the licensing issues related to its affiliate, Toing, and clarified that there were no food safety concerns involved in that matter. The company has emphasized its commitment to food safety and has been working to address the issues identified in the notices.
Food safety regulations in India are regulated under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006, which aims to ensure the availability of safe and wholesome food to consumers. The FSSAI regularly monitors compliance among food businesses to uphold consumer safety standards.
The development comes at a time when the demand for online food and grocery delivery services has surged, especially post-pandemic, making adherence to safety and quality standards increasingly critical in this sector. The FSSAI has urged e-commerce platforms to enhance their quality control measures to prevent such issues from recurring in the future.
