G7 Summit: Modi Engages in Discussions with Canadas Carney, Plans Canada Visit by Year-End and Pursuit of Trade Agreement
India and Canada are currently engaged in negotiations to establish a free trade agreement aimed at enhancing bilateral economic relations. Last month, Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal visited Canada, leading a delegation that included over 100 representatives from various sectors of industry. This visit underscores both nations commitment to facilitating trade and investment opportunities.
The negotiation process for the free trade agreement (FTA) is expected to address various trade barriers and promote collaboration in key areas such as technology, agriculture, and manufacturing. The FTA could potentially boost economic growth and create job opportunities in both countries.
As part of these discussions, both parties are focusing on aligning their regulatory frameworks, reducing tariffs, and expanding access to each others markets. The Indian government views Canada as a significant partner, particularly in sectors like natural resources, information technology, and education. Canada, in turn, seeks to strengthen trade ties with India, which is one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world.
Further talks are anticipated as both nations aim to finalize the terms of the FTA and hope to implement it within the coming years.
