Global Participation in International Day of Yoga Highlights Healthy Ageing Theme

On June 21, 2026, the International Day of Yoga was celebrated with a focus on the theme of healthy ageing, attracting participants from around the world. Indian missions across various countries took the lead in organizing events and activities aimed at promoting yoga as a means of enhancing physical and mental well-being in older adults.
The United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 as International Day of Yoga in 2014, recognizing yogas universal appeal and its potential contribution to physical and mental health. Each year, the day emphasizes a specific theme, and for 2026, the emphasis was on healthy ageing, highlighting the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle as individuals age.
Yoga practitioners and enthusiasts gathered in public spaces, parks, and community centers, engaging in group sessions that included asanas (yoga postures), meditation, and discussions on the benefits of yoga for senior health. Activities were designed not only to enhance physical fitness but also to foster social connections and mental well-being among participants.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs noted that fostering healthy ageing through yoga aligns with global health agendas, particularly in light of the increasing ageing population. According to the World Health Organization, the number of people aged 60 and above is expected to reach 2 billion by 2050, underscoring the necessity for initiatives that promote active and healthy lifestyles for older adults.
As part of the celebrations, various workshops, seminars, and wellness programs were also conducted, featuring yoga experts and health professionals who shared insights on the positive impact of yoga in managing age-related health issues. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to promote yoga and well-being globally, showcasing its role as a valuable tool for enhancing quality of life as individuals age.
