Government Acknowledges Possible 3-5% Mileage Reduction in Some Vehicles Due to E20 Fuel Blending

The Indian government has acknowledged that using E20 fuel, which contains 20% ethanol blended with gasoline, may result in a reduction of 3-5% in mileage for certain vehicles. This statement comes in defense of the ongoing blending initiative aimed at promoting renewable fuel sources.

E20 fuel is part of India’s broader strategy to enhance energy security and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Ethanol, which is derived from renewable sources such as sugarcane and starch crops, serves as an alternative fuel that can help in lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Nitin Gadkari, Indias Minister for Road Transport and Highways, addressed concerns over vehicle damage, stating that while there might be a “marginal” impact on mileage, the risk of engine damage due to E20 fuel is minimal. The government has tried to clarify misconceptions by explaining the cost structure, noting that E20 fuel cannot be priced lower than pure petrol because the production and blending processes maintain significant costs.
