Centre Directs the Blocking of Battery Management Applications for E-Rickshaws

The Government of India has mandated the removal of certain battery management applications that are utilized to control electric rickshaws (e-rickshaws). This decision follows reports of unauthorized access and control of these vehicles, leading to disruptions in service. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued the directive amidst growing security concerns related to the functionality of these apps.

The measures were taken after investigations revealed instances where these applications were used to disable e-rickshaws at random, causing inconvenience to drivers and passengers alike. The affected apps reportedly allow users to manipulate the battery management systems remotely, leading to stalled operations.

Additionally, investigations highlighted significant earnings losses for e-rickshaw drivers. Reports indicate that the hackers’ interference has caused earnings to plummet from approximately ₹1,000 to ₹600 per day, as drivers grapple with the repercussions of these technological vulnerabilities.

In the wake of these security concerns, government officials have instructed major tech companies, including Google and Apple, to promptly remove seven implicated apps from their app stores. The authorities are also coordinating with app developers to enhance security protocols and prevent such breaches in the future.

This incident has raised awareness regarding the need for improved cybersecurity measures for electric vehicles, as the growing adoption of e-vehicles in urban India brings with it certain technological challenges. Stakeholders in the automobile sector and policymakers are now called to work collaboratively to establish guidelines that safeguard the digital infrastructure surrounding electric transportation.
