Government approves issuance of 2 billion polymer banknotes in denominations of Rs 10 and Rs 20
The Indian government has authorized the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to produce two billion polymer banknotes, which will be used for both field trials and regular circulation. The Minister of Finance indicated that this move will allow for both paper and polymer currency to operate in tandem within the economy.
The RBI is currently in the process of sourcing the necessary materials for the production of these polymer notes. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the durability and lifespan of currency in circulation, as polymer notes are generally more resistant to wear and tear compared to their paper counterparts.
Polymer banknotes have been successfully implemented in several countries, offering advantages such as enhanced security features and the ability to withstand various environmental conditions. The RBI’s initiative reflects a growing trend towards modernizing the currency system, aligning with international practices in currency management. As the field trials commence, the RBI will assess the performance and public reception of these new notes before considering a wider rollout.
