Health Organizations Advocate for Revision of Indias Essential Medicines List
The Working Group on Access to Medicines and Treatments has reported that the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM) was last updated in 2022, containing a total of 384 medicines. In contrast, the World Health Organization (WHO) Model List of Essential Medicines has undergone revisions, with updates made in 2023 and anticipated changes in 2025. According to the Working Group, the current WHO Model List includes 523 essential medicines.
The NLEM serves as an important guideline for healthcare systems in various countries, ensuring the availability of critical medications. The WHO Model List, established to promote access to essential pharmacological treatments, is updated periodically to reflect advancements in medical knowledge and changes in public health needs. The discrepancy between the two lists highlights potential gaps in access to vital medicines in some regions, emphasizing the need for regular reviews and updates to national lists in line with international standards.
