Idukki Reservoir Reports Significantly Low Water Storage Levels
The Idukki Hydroelectric Project in Kerala is currently experiencing a significant reduction in reservoir levels, with storage recorded at only 23% as of July 1, 2023. This marks a 35% decrease from the same period last year when levels stood at 58%.
This decline in water levels is attributed to a combination of lower-than-average rainfall in the region over recent months and increased water consumption during the summer season. The Idukki dam, which plays a crucial role in meeting the electricity demands of the state, may face operational challenges if the reservoir levels do not improve.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and are implementing measures to manage resources effectively. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has indicated that if the situation persists, it may lead to a revision of power generation plans and possible load shedding to ensure stable electricity supply in the region. Climate forecasts suggest that the monsoon season, expected to begin soon, may alleviate the current shortage.
