IMD Forecasts Air Quality Index for Delhi as Precautionary Measures are Implemented Ahead of Diwali
As the festive season approaches, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast for Delhi, coinciding with the implementation of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Level III. This decision is part of the citys efforts to manage air quality during Diwali, a time when pollution levels typically rise due to increased firecracker usage.
The IMDs forecast indicates that Delhi is likely to experience a mix of weather conditions, including clear skies and light winds. These factors can contribute to the accumulation of pollutants in the air, particularly during the night and early morning hours. The IMD has emphasized the importance of monitoring air quality closely, especially as Diwali approaches, when the use of fireworks tends to spike.
Under GRAP Level III, several measures are being enforced to mitigate air pollution. These include restrictions on construction activities, the closure of brick kilns, and the regulation of industrial emissions. The authorities are also urging residents to refrain from burning waste and using firecrackers, which significantly contribute to the deterioration of air quality.
The IMD has warned that air quality in Delhi could deteriorate to the “very poor” category in the days following Diwali, particularly if weather conditions remain stagnant. The department has advised residents to take precautions, especially those with pre-existing health conditions, to minimize exposure to polluted air.
In light of these developments, the Delhi government is working to raise awareness about the adverse effects of air pollution and the importance of celebrating a greener Diwali. Campaigns promoting eco-friendly alternatives to traditional firecrackers are being encouraged, aiming to foster a safer and healthier environment for all.
As the festival draws near, the IMD and local authorities are committed to ensuring that residents are informed and prepared for the potential challenges posed by air quality issues. The collaborative efforts between the government and the community are crucial in addressing the environmental concerns associated with the festive season, ultimately striving for a balance between celebration and health.
