IMD Projects Below Normal Monsoon for April, Marking First Time in 11 Years

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), El Niño conditions are anticipated to develop after June 2024. Historically, the occurrence of El Niño has been associated with reduced rainfall patterns in India, with research indicating that approximately six out of ten El Niño years have resulted in below-average precipitation levels across the country.

El Niño is a climate phenomenon characterized by the warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, which can significantly influence global weather patterns. In India, this phenomenon often correlates with weakened monsoon seasons, leading to concerns about agricultural output and water availability.

As farmers and policymakers await updates on the status of the monsoon, experts are monitoring atmospheric conditions closely. The impact of El Niño on Indias weather can vary from year to year, and its manifestations depend on a range of complex factors, including the strength of the El Niño event and interactions with other climatic systems.

Continued observation and forecasting will be essential for mitigating the potential effects of diminished rainfall on agriculture, water resources, and overall economic stability.
