IMD Announces Expected Arrival of Monsoon in Kerala on May 26

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that last year, the monsoon arrived in Kerala on May 24, marking its earliest onset since 2009. This early arrival aligns with trends observed over two decades, as the IMDs operational forecasts for the date of monsoon onset in Kerala have proven accurate in 20 of the past 21 years, with the exception of 2015.

Historically, the southwest monsoon is crucial for Kerala, as it significantly influences the agricultural landscape and water resources in the region. The monsoon typically sets in during late May or early June, and variations in its timing can have substantial effects on farming and water availability, which are vital for the local economy. The IMDs forecasts are based on a range of meteorological data, helping to prepare citizens and sectors reliant on accurate weather predictions for the monsoon season.
