IMD’s April Forecast Indicates First Below-Normal Monsoon Projection in 11 Years

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated a likelihood of El Niño conditions developing after June 2023. El Niño, a climate pattern characterized by the warming of ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific, can have significant impacts on global weather patterns.

Historically, approximately 60% of El Niño years have correlated with reduced rainfall in India, which raises concerns about potential impacts on the countrys agricultural output and water resources. This is particularly relevant for regions that rely heavily on the monsoon season for irrigation.

The IMD routinely monitors oceanic and atmospheric conditions to provide forecasts and advisories, as variations in climate patterns like El Niño can trigger changes in rainfall distribution and intensity. Farmers, policymakers, and water resource managers will need to prepare for the potential consequences of these climatic shifts, including possible drought conditions in affected areas.
