IMO Chief Warns Against Shipping Being Affected by US-Iran Tensions

The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Kitack Lim, has emphasized the importance of ensuring that shipping operations remain unaffected by escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. Speaking at a recent maritime conference, Lim stressed that commercial shipping should not be used as a bargaining chip or collateral in geopolitical conflicts.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over the safety of shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for oil shipments, through which approximately 20% of the worlds oil supply is transported. In recent months, incidents of harassment and confrontation involving naval forces from both countries have raised alarm within the maritime community.

Lim urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and prioritize the safety of seafarers and vessels. He reiterated the role of the IMO in promoting safe and secure shipping practices and called for adherence to international laws that govern maritime operations.

In light of the ongoing tensions, shipping companies are advised to remain vigilant and updated on security developments in the region. The IMO continues to work collaboratively with member states to enhance maritime security and ensure safe passage for all vessels traversing through potentially hazardous areas.
