India Aims for 100 GW in Response to Global Hydropower Transition to Water Battery Systems, According to Report

According to the 2026 Global Hydropower Outlook, China remains the leading nation in hydropower development worldwide, boasting over 300 gigawatts (GW) of capacity currently under construction. This figure includes 218 GW dedicated to pumped storage hydroelectricity, a technology that allows for better energy storage and management by using excess energy to pump water to higher elevations for later use.

The report highlights Chinas commitment to renewable energy sources and its strategic investments in hydropower infrastructure. As global demand for renewable energy continues to rise, Chinas advancements in this sector are significant, given that hydropower is one of the largest sources of renewable electricity in the world.

In addition, the report underscores the overall growth of hydropower projects globally, as various countries explore ways to reduce carbon emissions and meet energy needs sustainably. The focus on hydropower aligns with international goals for energy transition and climate change mitigation, presenting both opportunities and challenges for nations involved in such development.
