India Aims for 100GW as Global Hydropower Embraces Water Battery Technology: Report

According to the 2026 Global Hydropower Outlook report, China remains the worlds leader in hydropower development, with over 300 gigawatts (GW) of capacity currently under construction. This includes approximately 218 GW dedicated to pumped storage projects, which are essential for balancing energy supply and demand by storing excess power generated during peak production times.

The report highlights Chinas significant investment in hydropower infrastructure, which aligns with the countrys broader energy strategy to reduce carbon emissions and transition towards renewable energy sources. Hydropower plays a crucial role in Chinas energy mix, providing a stable and reliable source of electricity while also aiding in flood control and irrigation efforts.

Globally, hydropower is the largest source of renewable electricity, and many countries are increasing their investments in this sector to meet the growing demand for clean energy. As nations strive to achieve their climate goals, the role of hydropower is expected to expand, with new technologies and practices being implemented to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
