India Approves Swift Export of Electricity to Flood-Affected Nepal

India has authorized the expedited export of electricity to Nepal following devastating floods that have significantly impacted the countrys hydropower infrastructure. This decision allows for the supply of 654 megawatts (MW) of electricity for up to 18 hours per day until December 31, 2023.

The floods have wreaked havoc on Nepals power sector, damaging 12 hydropower plants and disrupting electricity generation. With the winter approaching, the need for a stable power supply has become urgent for Nepal. The Indian government’s assistance aims to alleviate the energy crisis and support Nepals recovery efforts.

Nepal relies heavily on hydropower, which constitutes a significant part of its energy landscape, accounting for about 90% of its electricity production. The recent floods, influenced by heavy monsoon rains, have underscored the vulnerability of the countrys infrastructure, prompting international support and cooperation.

This export arrangement is part of a broader collaborative effort between India and Nepal, as the two countries seek to strengthen their bilateral ties, particularly in energy cooperation. By facilitating the energy transfer, India aims to not only assist a neighbor in distress but also enhance regional energy security.

As of now, the Indian government has also committed to supporting Nepal in rebuilding and improving its energy infrastructure to withstand future climate-related challenges.
