India Begins UNSC Campaign for 2028-29 Term with ‘SHANTI’ Vision Unveiling

India has officially launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028-29 term. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced the initiative during a recent event where he unveiled the SHANTI vision, which stands for “Sustainable, Holistic, and Inclusive approaches to Nations in Transition and Inclusion.”

The SHANTI vision aims to prioritize global peace and security through effective diplomatic engagement and cooperation. Jaishankar emphasized that Indias campaign will focus on several key issues, including maritime security, the safeguarding of seafarer safety, and combating terrorist financing. These themes align with Indias broader foreign policy priorities, particularly in promoting the safety and stability of international shipping lanes.

In addition to these specific agendas, Jaishankar also engaged in discussions with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. They addressed various pressing global challenges, including the crises in the Middle East and Ukraine, which have significant implications for international security.

Indias bid for a UNSC seat is part of its long-term goal to secure a more prominent role in global governance. The country aims to leverage its position to advocate for the interests of developing nations and promote a more equitable international order.

The UNSC consists of 15 members, including five permanent members (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms. Indias previous tenure on the UNSC occurred from 2011 to 2012, and it is hoping to secure support from the international community for the upcoming term.
