India Dominates Global Ship Recycling Market with 35.4% Share
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has reported that, based on the latest findings from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), India has successfully raised its share of global ship recycling activities to 35.4% in 2025, up from 30.1% in 2024.
This increase reflects Indias growing dominance in the ship recycling industry, which is an essential segment of the maritime sector due to its contributions to environmental sustainability and resource recovery. The country’s shipbreaking yards, primarily located in Alang, Gujarat, have been recognized for their compliance with international environmental standards, making them competitive on a global scale.
Indias ship recycling capabilities not only play a crucial role in reducing waste and promoting recycling of materials such as steel and aluminum but also support local economies by creating jobs and generating revenue. As the global demand for eco-friendly recycling practices increases, Indias significant share of the market positions it as a key player in the international ship recycling landscape.
