India Experiences 126 mm Decrease in Rainfall, Marking Fourth-Lowest Total in 125 Years Due to El Niño Effects
India has experienced a significant decrease in rainfall this year, with a recorded drop of 12.6%, marking the fourth-lowest rainfall in the past 125 years. This decline is largely attributed to the ongoing El Niño phenomenon, which has been linked to alterations in weather patterns across the globe.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the country has received 1,046.2 millimeters of rainfall from June 1 to September 30, which is considerably lower than the long-term average of 1,197.7 millimeters for this period. The El Niño effect, characterized by warmer ocean temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific, has been known to disrupt monsoon patterns, leading to reduced precipitation in various regions.
The impact of this rainfall deficit is being felt across several states, particularly in the agricultural sector, which relies heavily on the monsoon rains for crop production. States such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand have reported significant shortfalls, raising concerns about food security and the livelihoods of farmers.
In response to the situation, the Indian government is closely monitoring the weather patterns and has initiated measures to mitigate the effects of the drought. This includes providing financial assistance to affected farmers and promoting water conservation practices to ensure sustainable agricultural practices.
Experts have warned that if the El Niño conditions persist, the country may face further challenges in the upcoming months. The IMD has advised farmers to adopt alternative cropping strategies and to utilize water-saving technologies to cope with the reduced rainfall.
As the situation develops, the government and relevant agencies are working to assess the long-term implications of this rainfall deficit and to implement strategies that can help communities adapt to changing climatic conditions. The focus remains on ensuring that the agricultural sector can withstand the pressures of climate variability while safeguarding the food supply for the nation.
