India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement Ratified, Effective October 20
India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement Ratified, Set to Take Effect on October 20
The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and New Zealand has been officially ratified and is scheduled to come into effect on October 20, 2023. This agreement marks a significant opportunity for both nations, aimed at enhancing economic ties and fostering deeper trade relations.
The FTA is anticipated to open new avenues for export and investment, providing Indian businesses with greater access to the New Zealand market, especially in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, textiles, and agriculture. Conversely, New Zealand will benefit from easier access to Indias rapidly growing consumer market, particularly for goods like dairy products and meat.
Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized that the agreement would facilitate duty-free access for a range of exports, potentially boosting Indias trade volumes significantly. Furthermore, the FTA includes clauses that ensure goods from third countries routed through New Zealand do not receive duty benefits under this agreement, thereby preserving the integrity of the trade deal.
The ratification of the FTA reflects both countries commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, which have been on an upward trajectory in recent years. India and New Zealand have engaged in numerous discussions on various collaborative efforts, and the FTA is viewed as a cornerstone of future economic cooperation.
As international trade continues to evolve, the India-New Zealand FTA is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the economic landscape of the Asia-Pacific region.
