India’s Envoy to China Highlights Positive Impact of Increased Chinese Investment on Bilateral Relations
Ambassador Vikram Doraiswami has emphasized the need for India to enhance its export activities to China, highlighting the imbalanced nature of current trade relations between the two countries. While trade has been increasing, he pointed out that it remains disproportionate, with imports from China significantly surpassing Indian exports.
During a recent discussion, Ambassador Doraiswami specifically noted the pharmaceuticals sector as a key area where India holds a competitive advantage on a global scale. He suggested that bolstering exports in this field could contribute to a more equitable trading relationship. The Indian pharmaceutical industry is known for its robust production capabilities, cost-effectiveness, and ability to provide a wide range of generic medications, which could meet the growing healthcare demands in China.
According to data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Indias exports to China were approximately $20.5 billion in the fiscal year 2021-2022, while imports from China reached around $70 billion in the same period. This trade disparity underscores the potential for growth in Indian exports, particularly in sectors where the country has established strengths. The ambassador’s remarks may encourage policy discussions aimed at fostering greater bilateral trade cooperation, particularly in high-demand sectors.
