India Increases Russian Oil Imports in May as Refineries Enhance Procurement

Indias total crude oil imports saw an 8% increase in May compared to the previous month, marking a significant rise in the countrys energy procurement efforts. This increase can be attributed, in part, to a notable 21% month-on-month surge in imports from Russia, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA).

This uptick in imports reflects Indias growing demand for oil, driven by a recovery in economic activities and an expansion of industrial operations. Russias increased share in India’s crude imports also highlights the changing dynamics of global oil supply chains, particularly as India seeks to diversify its energy sources.

As of May 2023, India is projected to continue relying on foreign oil supplies to meet its energy needs, with the growing imports from Russia adding to the complexity of geopolitical relations in the energy market. The long-term implications of these import trends for Indias energy security and its commitments to renewable energy targets remain to be seen.
