Indias Aspirations in Semiconductor Industry: Can It Emerge as a Global Hub?

 

Semiconductors play a critical role in various sectors, serving as the essential components for electronics, electric vehicles (EVs), telecommunications, artificial intelligence (AI), data centers, defense systems, and manufacturing processes. As global economic conditions and geopolitical tensions become increasingly unpredictable, the need for a self-sufficient semiconductor ecosystem has grown more urgent.

In recent years, countries have recognized the strategic importance of semiconductors, leading to increased investment in domestic production capabilities. Governments are implementing policies to support research and development, streamline regulations, and incentivize companies to build chip manufacturing facilities locally. For instance, in the United States, the CHIPS Act was enacted to bolster domestic semiconductor manufacturing by providing financial support and fostering public-private partnerships. Similarly, the European Union has outlined plans to enhance its semiconductor production capacity as part of its broader industrial strategy.

Building a resilient semiconductor supply chain not only aims to ensure technological independence but also to mitigate risks associated with external supply disruptions, which can impact various industries significantly.
