India’s Seafood Exports Exceed ₹72,000 Crore, Boosting Optimism Among Aquaculture Farmers

Farmers Call on Central Government to Pursue Broader Free Trade Agreements

Agricultural representatives have urged the Indian government to actively seek Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with a wider range of countries. Their goal is to diversify trade relations and lessen the reliance on the United States as a primary market for their exports.

The request comes amid concerns about the volatility of foreign markets and the impact of U.S. trade policies on local agriculture. By establishing FTAs with multiple nations, farmers believe they can secure better prices for their products and mitigate risks associated with market dependency.

In recent years, Indias government has been exploring various trade agreements, including those with countries in the European Union, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and the United Kingdom. If successful, these agreements can offer new opportunities for Indian farmers, particularly in sectors like rice, spices, and dairy products.

The agricultural sector has historically faced challenges including fluctuating prices and competition from imports. Farmers argue that forging new trade relationships could enhance their bargaining power and ensure a more stable economic environment for Indian agriculture.
