India to Establish 5,000 Ethanol Fuel Stations by End of 2027

India is intensifying its efforts towards ethanol production and usage by planning to set up 5,000 ethanol fuel stations by the end of 2027. This initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at reducing the countrys reliance on fossil fuel imports, which currently account for a significant portion of Indias $120 billion import bill. In conjunction with this plan, the government is also launching a fleet of flex-fuel vehicles, which can operate on varying blends of petrol and ethanol, thereby promoting more sustainable fuel consumption.

The increased focus on ethanol aims to simultaneously enhance farmers income by providing them with a steady market for sugarcane and other feedstocks used in ethanol production. To bolster this initiative, regulatory changes are being proposed to allow for higher ethanol blending in conventional fuels and to encourage the adoption of alternative fuels across the automotive sector.

Indias ethanol program aligns with broader initiatives to enhance energy security, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and stimulate rural economies. The government hopes that these measures will not only support domestic farmers but also contribute to meeting its climate goals in the face of growing global energy demands.
