International Yoga Day 2026: Main Event Scheduled for June 21 in Kolkata, with Prime Minister in Attendance
Union Minister for Ayush has announced that the theme for 2026, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” will emphasize the significant role yoga plays in enhancing physical health, mental well-being, and the ageing process. This theme aims to underscore the importance of yoga in fostering a holistic approach to health as individuals grow older.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by the Ministry of Ayush to promote traditional practices and their benefits in modern healthcare. The focus on healthy ageing is particularly relevant given the increasing global population of older adults, which is expected to rise significantly in the coming years.
Yoga, which has been practiced for centuries, is known for its ability to improve flexibility, strength, and mental clarity. Research has increasingly supported its benefits in managing stress, anxiety, and chronic health conditions, which are prevalent among older adults. The ministers statement serves as a call to action for both practitioners and healthcare providers to incorporate yoga into wellness programs aimed at improving the quality of life for the elderly.
As part of the preparations for the 2026 theme, the Ministry plans to organize workshops, seminars, and public awareness campaigns to educate the community about the positive impacts of yoga on ageing, while also encouraging widespread participation in yoga practices.
