Iran Conflict Affects NRI Deposits as Overseas Indians Withdraw Nearly $2 Billion in March

In March, overseas Indians withdrew approximately $2 billion more than they deposited in Indian bank accounts, marking a notable shift in financial activity among Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). This trend has been attributed primarily to a decrease in funds held in Non-Resident External (NRE) Rupee Accounts and Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) accounts.

As a result of these withdrawals, the total value of NRI deposits in Indian banks fell to $165.65 billion. Analysts suggest that this financial trend may be influenced by geopolitical uncertainties, especially stemming from the ongoing conflict in Iran, which has raised concerns about global markets and economic stability.

NRE accounts, which allow NRIs to hold and manage income in foreign currency freely, and NRO accounts, which manage income earned within India, are critical for securing investment and savings for Indian citizens living abroad. The decline in these accounts could reflect NRIs diminishing confidence in the stability of the Indian economy amid rising international tensions.

Experts will be closely monitoring these trends, as shifts in NRI deposits can have significant implications for Indias foreign exchange reserves and overall economic health.
