ISRO Partners with ATREE to Advance Sustainable Land Management Initiatives

A new partnership has been established to concentrate on the mapping of India’s grasslands and other open natural ecosystems. This initiative aims to assess the effects of restoration efforts on degraded lands while also developing enhanced methodologies for estimating carbon storage both above and below ground.

The collaboration seeks to address the critical issue of land degradation in India, which impacts biodiversity, agricultural productivity, and overall ecosystem health. By effectively mapping these ecosystems, the partnership aims to create a comprehensive understanding of their current conditions, which will inform future restoration strategies.

Additionally, the development of improved methodologies for carbon estimation is vital in the context of climate change, as it will provide better data for policymakers and contribute to national and global carbon accounting efforts. This initiative is expected to support India’s commitments to restoring degraded lands, enhancing climate resilience, and achieving its sustainability goals.
