Jammu and Kashmir Government Seeks Inclusion of Sufiyana Music in UNESCOs Intangible Heritage List

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has formally reached out to Union Minister of Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, advocating for the inclusion of a specific cultural heritage site in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

In his letter, Abdullah emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting the regions rich cultural history, which includes a diverse array of traditions, languages, and monuments. He underscored that recognition by UNESCO would not only help in safeguarding these cultural assets but also attract tourism and economic development to Jammu and Kashmir.

The UNESCO World Heritage list includes sites deemed to have outstanding universal value, and the inclusion process involves rigorous evaluation and documentation. The Chief Minister’s initiative reflects ongoing efforts to highlight Jammu and Kashmir’s unique cultural identity and to secure national recognition for its cultural heritage.
