Javed Akhtar Critiques Lagaan Script, Comments on Character Portrayal
Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar recently reflected on his initial skepticism regarding the 2001 film “Lagaan,” which was directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and produced by Aamir Khan. In his comments, Akhtar expressed concerns about the films unconventional aspects, such as its protagonist wearing traditional Indian attire (dhoti), its historical context set during British colonial rule in the late 19th century, and its unique storytelling format focused on a cricket match that unfolds at a slower pace.
Akhtar also pointed out the films narrative tension surrounding the unpredictability of rain, a critical plot point that affects the outcome of the cricket game. Despite Akhtars doubts, Aamir Khan maintained a strong belief in the projects potential. His confidence paid off when “Lagaan” became a monumental success, both critically and commercially. The film received widespread acclaim for its storytelling, music, and performances, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and helping to reestablish the genre of historical dramas in Indian cinema. Its impact has been significant, often regarded as one of the greatest films in Indian film history.
