Kaleshwaram Reservoirs Aim to Alleviate Water Stress in Telangana

The Kaleshwaram Reservoir project is expected to significantly alleviate water scarcity issues in the state of Telangana. Officially launched in 2016, the project is part of a broader initiative to enhance irrigation and drinking water supply in the region.

The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme, one of the worlds largest irrigation projects, aims to optimize water resources by harnessing the Godavari River. Once fully operational, the reservoirs will provide water for over 3 million acres of agricultural land, benefiting farmers and supporting local economies.

In addition to irrigation, the project aims to supply drinking water to urban centers across the state, including Hyderabad, addressing the growing demands of a rapidly urbanizing population. According to government reports, the reservoirs have the capacity to store nearly 50 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water, which will be drawn into a network of canals to ensure distribution to various regions.

The Kaleshwaram project is particularly crucial as Telangana experiences periodic drought conditions, and its successful implementation could play a key role in enhancing food security and sustaining livelihoods for residents dependent on agriculture.

As the reservoirs begin to fill and operations ramp up, state officials are hopeful that this initiative will bring long-term relief to the water crisis that has affected both rural and urban communities in Telangana.
