Karnataka Assembly Rejects Kasturirangan Report on Western Ghats
The Karnataka Assembly has officially rejected the Kasturirangan report, which proposed guidelines for the conservation and management of the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The report, which was released by the Kasturirangan Committee in 2013, aimed to identify ecologically sensitive areas and suggested restrictions on development activities in the region.
Assembly members criticized the report as “unscientific,” arguing that it does not adequately consider the needs and livelihoods of local populations. The decision was made following extensive discussions in which various political parties expressed their concerns about the implications of the report on agricultural practices and economic development in the region.
The Western Ghats are known for their rich biodiversity and are home to numerous endemic species. The area faces challenges from deforestation, land use changes, and climate change, which have raised questions about sustainable development.
The rejection of the report has sparked a debate about the balance between environmental conservation and economic growth, particularly in a region heavily reliant on agriculture and tourism. The Assemblys decision reflects the complexities involved in managing the ecological integrity of the Western Ghats while accommodating local developmental interests.
Further discussions are expected among stakeholders, including environmentalists, lawmakers, and local communities, to seek alternative strategies for conserving the regions unique ecosystem without hampering the livelihoods of its residents.
