Karnataka Assembly Rejects Kasturirangan Report on Western Ghats

The Karnataka Assembly has voted to reject the Kasturirangan report concerning the protection and management of the Western Ghats in its current form. The report, initiated by the National Wildlife Board, aimed to delineate sensitive areas within the Western Ghats that require conservation measures due to their rich biodiversity and ecological significance.

Members of the assembly expressed concerns that the report does not adequately consider local livelihoods and the socio-economic implications for communities residing in the region. The rejection reflects ongoing tensions between environmental conservation efforts and the priorities of local inhabitants, who depend on the land for agriculture, forestry, and other economic activities.

The Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the worlds eight “hottest hotspots” of biological diversity, hosting an array of flora and fauna, many of which are endemic to the region. The Kasturirangan report, released in 2013, has faced criticism over the proposed land use regulations that some stakeholders believe could hinder development and impact local economies.

Going forward, the state government intends to form a committee to revise the report, seeking a balance between conservation efforts and the needs of local communities. This decision aligns with Karnataka’s ongoing dialogues regarding sustainable development and environmental protection practices in the face of climate change and ecological challenges.
