Karnataka Minister Emphasizes Focus on Drinking Water Over Irrigation

Karnataka Minister for Water Resources, upheld the significance of the Mekedatu project, asserting that its primary focus is on providing drinking water rather than irrigation. During a recent press conference, the minister emphasized that the project aims to enhance water supply for the regions of Bengaluru and its surrounding areas, addressing the critical water scarcity issues faced by residents.

Mekedatu, situated at the confluence of the Cauvery River and the Arkavathi River, is a proposed multi-purpose project that has faced considerable debate and opposition. Proponents argue that it will help supply drinking water to over 11 million people, while critics, particularly from Tamil Nadu, express concerns regarding its potential impact on downstream water availability and agricultural needs.

The governments commitment to prioritizing drinking water infrastructure aligns with broader statewide initiatives to ensure equitable access to clean water. In 2022, Karnataka launched the Jal Shakti Abhiyan aimed at water conservation and management, reflecting an increased focus on sustainable water resource management amid climate-related challenges.
