Keralas Revised Age Rule Expected to Decrease School Admissions by 100,000

The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has submitted a report to the government indicating a significant change in the age criteria for school admissions. According to the report, children who will turn five years old during the 2027-28 academic year will be excluded from admission into Class I temporarily, as the state has decided to raise the minimum admission age.

This adjustment aims to align the enrollment process with the developmental readiness of children, ensuring better educational outcomes. The new policy reflects ongoing efforts to standardize admission practices and promote early childhood education, recognizing the importance of age appropriateness in a child’s learning journey.

The government is expected to provide further details on the implementation of this policy and its impact on current and future students and educational stakeholders. Additionally, schools and parents will be informed about the transitional arrangements that will be made for the affected cohort, ensuring they remain adequately supported during this period.
