KGH Designated as Centre of Competence for Haemoglobinopathies to Assist Tribal Communities
A new state-of-the-art facility has been established with an investment of ₹3.77 crore, marking the first of its kind in South India to implement newborn screening within 24 hours of birth. This initiative is specifically designed to serve the tribal populations within the Araku parliamentary constituency, which is located in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
The newborn screening program aims to identify various congenital disorders early, allowing for timely medical intervention and improved health outcomes for infants. This initiative is particularly significant as it seeks to address healthcare disparities in tribal regions, where access to medical services may be limited.
Officials indicate that the facility will not only screen newborns but also provide education to parents regarding the importance of early detection of health issues. The program is part of broader efforts to enhance healthcare infrastructure and services in rural and tribal areas, reflecting a commitment to improving maternal and child health in these communities.
