Kharge Criticizes Centre, Calling Labour Codes a Significant Setback for Workers

Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Indian National Congress party, criticized the government for the unilateral drafting and implementation of the new labour codes, labeling them as “anti-worker.” He highlighted that these significant changes to labor laws were carried out without adequate consultation with stakeholders, including labor unions and workers representatives. Kharge also pointed out that the Indian Labour Conference, a key platform for dialogue between the government, employers, and labor representatives, has not been convened since 2015.

The new labour codes, which aim to streamline regulations governing employment and labor relations, have been a subject of debate among various political parties and labor organizations. Proponents argue that the codes will enhance ease of doing business and attract investment, while critics contend that they undermine workers rights and job security. The lack of consultation has raised concerns about transparency and inclusivity in policymaking, particularly given the historical significance of the Indian Labour Conference in addressing labor issues.

As labor rights remain a critical concern in India, the ongoing discourse around these codes is likely to continue, with various stakeholders advocating for a more collaborative approach to labor policy reforms.
