KSOU Vice-Chancellor to Consult Karnataka Governor Following Bank Account Freezing

The Congress government in Karnataka has voiced its opposition to the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) hosting a three-day conference focusing on the Hindutva ideologue Deendayal Upadhyaya. The conference aims to explore Upadhyaya’s contributions to Indian philosophy and politics, particularly his ideas on integral humanism and the role of culture in nation-building.

Deendayal Upadhyaya, who lived from 1916 to 1968, was a prominent figure in the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the precursor to the current ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His ideologies have significantly influenced Hindu nationalist thought in India.

The Congress government’s opposition is grounded in concerns over the perceived promotion of divisive ideologies and potential marginalization of secular values that they advocate for. This opposition reflects broader political tensions in Karnataka, a state known for its diverse cultural and political landscape.

The conference organizers have defended their initiative, stating that it seeks to provide a platform for scholarly discussion and a deeper understanding of Upadhyaya’s philosophies, emphasizing academic freedom and the importance of diverse viewpoints in educational settings.
