Kudumbashree Grows Vegetables and Flowers Across 14,000 Acres for Onam Celebrations

Kudumbashrees joint liability groups are set to cultivate high-quality, pesticide-free vegetables and fruits across an expansive area of 14,000 acres as part of their initiatives known as the Onakkani and Nirapolima programmes. This initiative aims to promote sustainable agricultural practices and enhance food security by providing healthier options to consumers.

The Onakkani programme, traditionally linked to the Onam festival in Kerala, focuses on ensuring the availability of fresh and organic produce during this significant harvest time. Nirapolima, on the other hand, emphasizes ongoing sustainable agricultural practices to improve the overall health of the farming community and the environment.

This large-scale cultivation project is expected to not only enhance the livelihoods of local farmers involved in these joint liability groups but also contribute to the regions economy by increasing the supply of organic produce in local markets. The Kudumbashree programme, initiated by the Government of Kerala, has a robust framework for empowering women and promoting self-sustainability, making this project a key part of their broader mission.
