Ladakh Implements Shutdown in Response to Centres Omission of Draft and Policy Initiatives
Tsering Dorjey Lakrook, president of the Ladakh Buddhist Association, has expressed concerns that the central government is attempting to diminish its commitments regarding long-standing demands from the region. The Ladakh Buddhist Association is one of the primary organizations in discussions with the Centre over issues such as the demand for statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which provides for special autonomy and governance structures for certain tribal areas.
These demands have been a focal point for many residents of Ladakh, especially following its reorganization into a Union Territory in 2019. The Sixth Schedule aims to protect the rights and culture of indigenous communities, and local leaders believe that inclusion in this framework is critical for preserving Ladakh’s unique heritage and addressing the socio-economic challenges faced by the region.
Negotiations with the central government have involved various stakeholders, including local political representatives, community leaders, and civil society organizations, all advocating for measures to ensure the sustainable development and self-governance of Ladakh. The response from the Centre regarding these demands is anticipated to be crucial in shaping the future political landscape of Ladakh.
