Living on ₹13,690 in an Urban Environment

The Uttar Pradesh government recently announced an increase in the minimum wage for workers, marking the first adjustment in 12 years. The new minimum wage has been raised by ₹2,377, which has provided some relief to the labor force. However, many workers in the Noida Special Economic Zone (SEZ) contend that the increment is insufficient to cover their living expenses, leaving them with little to save for the future.

Shrimansi Kaushik, a workforce advocate, highlights that over the years, both the working conditions and the aspirations of the labor community have diminished. Despite this wage increase, workers in SEZs continue to face financial challenges, underscoring the need for further reforms in labor policies and assistance to elevate their standard of living. The adjustment raises ongoing discussions regarding the adequacy of minimum wage laws in light of inflation and the rising cost of living in urban areas.
