Starting October 1, 2023, the Indian government will require biometric Aadhaar authentication for consumers to avail subsidised Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) refills. This move is part of the governments initiative to streamline deliveries and curb fraud in the subsidy system.

According to reports, approximately 27.43 crore LPG consumers will be affected by this policy, requiring them to complete an electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) process. The eKYC can be done through various methods including mobile applications and online platforms offered by gas agencies. Those who fail to complete the authentication process may not be eligible for subsidised refills, although they can still purchase LPG at market rates.

The biometric authentication process aims to ensure that only eligible beneficiaries receive the subsidy and addresses concerns related to duplicate registrations and misuse of subsidy benefits. This initiative falls under the governments “One Nation, One Gas” policy to create a unified gas supply system across the country.
