Maharashtra Finalizes Documentation of More Than 23,000 Wetlands

According to data from the Maharashtra Wetlands Dashboard, which is maintained by the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM), the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Nagpur divisions have the highest number of wetlands in the state of Maharashtra. Specifically, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar is reported to have 5,196 wetlands, while the Nagpur division has 5,086 wetlands.

Wetlands play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, supporting biodiversity, and providing ecosystem services such as flood regulation and water purification. The identification and mapping of these wetlands are vital for environmental conservation efforts, especially as Maharashtra faces challenges related to urban development and climate change. Ongoing monitoring and assessment of these areas are essential for protecting these valuable natural resources.
