Maharashtra Postpones Enforcement of Marathi Language Policy, Launches Training Program for Taxi and Auto Drivers

In a recent statement, the Transport Minister confirmed that the existing mandate requiring individuals to communicate in Marathi remains in effect. However, the Minister clarified that driving licenses will not be revoked solely based on insufficient proficiency in the Marathi language during this period of enforcement.

This announcement comes amid ongoing discussions about linguistic requirements in public services, particularly concerning the states efforts to promote Marathi as the primary mode of communication. The Minister emphasized the importance of language proficiency while also recognizing the need for inclusivity and fairness in the licensing process.

As the state continues to implement measures to enhance Marathi usage, the Transport Department is working on providing language support for non-Marathi speakers, ensuring they have access to necessary resources for acquiring and retaining their driving licenses.

This decision has been welcomed by various community and advocacy groups, who have expressed concerns over the potential implications of strict language mandates on drivers who may not be fluent in Marathi.
