MHA Requires CAA Applicants to Declare Passport Status and Surrender Foreign Passports

The Home Ministry has officially notified an amendment to the Citizenship Rules, a significant development following the recent victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal. This political shift marks the first time the BJP has taken power in the state, which is home to a substantial population of the Matua community.

The Matua community, primarily comprising Hindus who migrated from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) during the Partition, has been recognized as a key demographic in the ongoing discussions regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The CAA aims to provide citizenship to non-Muslim refugees who faced religious persecution in neighboring countries, including Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, before December 31, 2014.

This amendment to the Citizenship Rules is seen as a move to expedite the implementation of the CAA and could have significant implications for the citizenship status of members of the Matua community and other similar groups. The Home Ministry has stated that the changes will facilitate streamlined processes for individuals seeking citizenship under the provisions of the CAA, thus potentially benefiting many in West Bengal and beyond.

As political dynamics evolve in West Bengal following the BJPs electoral gains, further developments related to citizenship and community integration are anticipated. The situation may also prompt discussions around religious identity and migration policy in the broader context of Indian politics.
