Migratory Honey Bees Adopt Warm Shelters for Winter Retention in Kashmir

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM), located in Pulwama, is conducting research aimed at developing climate-resilient honeybee varieties. This initiative is designed to support beekeepers by reducing the need to relocate their hives to warmer plains during winter months, a practice that has traditionally been employed to ensure the survival of the bees in colder climates.

This innovative research comes in response to the challenges posed by climate change, which has been affecting the health and productivity of bee populations globally. By enhancing the resilience of honeybees, CSIR-IIIM aims to improve the sustainability of beekeeping in various regions across India, particularly in Himalayan areas where extreme weather fluctuations are becoming increasingly common.

The initiative not only seeks to stabilize local honey production but also contributes to the broader goal of biodiversity conservation and the maintenance of pollination services crucial for agricultural ecosystems. The findings from this project may help improve the management practices of beekeepers and encourage sustainable agricultural practices in the region.
