Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train: India to Launch First High-Speed Rail Service by 2027; Key Features and Travel Time Details Announced

Indias inaugural bullet train is on track to commence operations by 2027, with the Surat to Bilimora segment scheduled for its inaugural launch. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reported that the construction of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor has reached over 80% completion.

This significant infrastructure undertaking employs advanced Japanese Shinkansen technology, which is renowned for its efficiency and safety. When operational, the bullet train is expected to significantly cut travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, potentially reducing the journey from several hours to approximately two hours.

In addition to improving connectivity between these major urban centers, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor is envisioned as a blueprint for expanding high-speed rail networks across India. The project is not only anticipated to enhance passenger convenience but also aims to boost economic growth by promoting trade and tourism within the region. The total investment for the project amounts to approximately ₹1.1 trillion (about $15 billion), with funding support from Japan in the form of loans for infrastructure development.
