Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing Affirms Commitment to Prevent Use of Territory by Anti-India Groups

India is set to provide training to the Myanmar military for United Nations peacekeeping operations, signifying a continuation of its defense cooperation with the Southeast Asian nation. This initiative forms part of broader discussions between the two countries, which also encompass critical issues such as the ongoing detention of Aung San Suu Kyi, the former leader and Nobel laureate who has been in custody since February 2021 following a military coup.

The talks further explore significant infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and trade in the region. Among these projects is the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project, which is intended to facilitate transport between India’s Mizoram state and Myanmar’s Sittwe port. Additionally, the trilateral Moreh-Mae Sot highway project aims to establish a direct overland route between India’s northeastern states, Myanmar, and Thailand, with the objective of boosting economic ties and regional integration.

This engagement comes at a time when Myanmar is facing international scrutiny over its political situation and human rights issues, and reflects India’s strategic interests in maintaining stability and fostering partnerships in its neighborhood.
