Mysuru-Based Eye Surgeons Conduct Eye Care Camp in Ghana
Dr. K.V. Ravishankar has emphasized the critical demand for pediatric eye care in Sub-Saharan Africa, revealing that approximately 80,000 children in the region are in need of cataract surgery. This highlights a significant public health issue, as untreated cataracts can lead to lifelong visual impairment and affect a childs quality of life and educational opportunities.
Currently, access to surgical interventions and specialized eye care facilities remains limited in many areas of Sub-Saharan Africa. A lack of resources and trained healthcare professionals further complicates the situation. Experts suggest that increasing awareness, improving healthcare infrastructure, and providing more training for local eye care professionals could help address this pressing need and ultimately reduce the burden of visual impairment among children in the region. Various organizations and initiatives are working to promote pediatric ophthalmology, aiming to enhance access to necessary surgeries and preventative care.
